Similar species: H. gloriosa. In scripta the antemedial line goes obliquely from the costa outwards and curves down to the ventral margin of the wing so that the basal area is defined outwardly by an arc; there is a white preapical patch on the costa that diffuses back along the costa past the trace of black of the pm line and also diffuses down to the reniform spot. In gloriosa the am line has an abrupt 90 degree jog in it near the middle like a notch, or a single step in the staircase formed by the am line; there white preapical patch is a well defined white triangle cut off from the rest of the costa and from the reniform spot by a complate black line from the pm line.
