The quest: Desire a reasonable distance measure for constructing for genetic maps

Problems with maps based solely on the recombination frequency c

Recombination frequency c is not additive

c underestimates the distance, especially when large (c near 1/2)

Mapping functions

Require some gene distance measure that is additive

Obvious one: the expected number of crossovers, m, between two loci.

Haldane's mapping function (1919)

Example

Lots of other mapping functions

Genetic versus physical maps

Map expansion and shrinkage
