Cloned genes can be used in

 

(i)                          Direct detection.  e.g., sickle-cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and Huntington's disease:

b. Indirect detection e.g., for hemophilia A

 

                                                                                                         

Disease allele can be detected:

 

(i)      after birth

(ii)                       in utero e.g., by amniocentesis

 

 

(iii)   in preimplantation embryos

 

Some ethical issues to consider:

 

(i)                          Who has the right to the information?

(ii)                       What characters should be selected for or against?

(iii)                    Who should pay for expensive technology?
