Genetic basis of complex traits

Quantitative traits

The Genetics of Human Disease

Mapping genes underlying complex traits

Candidate locus approach

One looks for associations between the trait and the average values for particular alleles at the candidate locus

Example: Apo E (Apolioprotein E gene)

Example: D4 dopamine receptor (D4DR)

Marker-trait associations

Family analysis

A significant difference between offspring carrying alternative parental marker alleles implies a linked QTL.

M1Q (1/2)(1-c) a
M1q (1/2)c 0
M2Q (1/2)c a
